Sunday morning started off early with the first walkers arriving keen and wanting to start, while the rest of the world slumbered. By the time the registration was due to open, many hardy walkers and cyclists, were waiting for the word to go for the full Challenge; bikes and spares checked and rechecked, water bottles full and bladders empty, then GO.
When the 20 Km folk had departed, it was soon the turn of the 10 Km cyclist and walkers and then the fun walkers and clubs on the 5 Km´s.
By the time all registration was completed, around 400 people where somewhere around the Embalsé and it’s surrounding roads, accompanied by dogs of all shapes and sizes and all in the name of CHARITY.
For those finishing, there was a welcome chance of a free foot massage, kindly donated by 3 lovely ladies, Saphia, Margarita and Caroline. The tearoom was offering delicious home made goodies by Pat, at a reasonable price and various types of beverages, all very welcome to the walkers, cyclists and spectators alike, who needs an excuse to enjoy food and drink in such a splendid location.
By the time the later starters where returning and the raffle drawn, a BBQ was underway to finish off what had been a fantastic day with over 2,000 euros received on the day and sponsorship money arriving all the time. This annual event goes from strength to strength, despite someone sabotaging the course the night before and also while many on route.
The charities benefiting are The Help Association Vega Baga and Paul Cunningham Nurses.
For those unable to stay until the end, a list of all winning raffle tickets, will be displayed in the PCN shop in Quesada and at both `Help´ offices in Torrevieja and San Miguel and also at Casa La Pedrera.
If you are still collecting your sponsorship money, or would like to make a donation to either of these worthy causes, they can also be paid in to any of the above.
Thank you must go to all those nameless people who helped on the day directing cars and then contestants; those helping with registration, feeding and watering the entrants and spectators; the ladies with the treatments, the artist and photographer for their skills, all given to help both charities.
All credit for the organization of the day and last minute remarking of the route, must go to Jenni Ray of Casa La Pedrera, who throughout the year, does tireless work for many local charities.
